Manchester United have beaten Liverpool and Chelsea in the race for 14-year-old Burnley striker John Cofie and agreed an undisclosed fee with the Clarets.
Burnley rejected a reported £250,000 bid from Liverpool for Cofie this week.

But the German-born Ghanaian refused to return to training with the Clarets and they agreed he could leave Turf Moor.

Burnley have inserted a 25% sell-on clause in the deal, which also gives them first refusal on any loan deal and a future friendly match with United.

It will be three years before Cofie can sign professional terms at Old Trafford and the friendly game will take place within 12 months of that.

Cofie was signed by the Clarets last summer after he was spotted at a youth tournament in Germany.

"The player was unwilling to come back to Burnley so we didn't have a choice in keeping him here," Burnley operational director Brendan Flood told his club's website.

"He was going to go to one of the clubs chasing his signature and in the end, we all felt that Manchester United was the right option.

"He has a good future ahead of him and hopefully we can try and keep youngsters of John's quality at the club in future."

Is this a joke? I think so, especially when you consider that Spurs payed £99,999 for Jimmy Greaves in 1961 who went on to score 220 goals in 321 games for us.

I was ever really going to post after a good result and almost as importantly a brilliant performance against a very poor Besiktas. Benayoun will get the plaudits with his assists and three goals, though my man of the match has to be Javier Mascherano - he never gave the ball away, won every challenge he put his foot into and was the reason we could pressure the Turks the way we could. I will be the first to admit I wasn't keen on his arrival 10 months ago, but I've got to hand it to him he's a world class player and makes Sissoko look amateur (that said, most premiership players could do that at the moment). Big game against Fulham this weekend, I expect no less than a win obviously, and maybe (whisper it) our season could be getting back on track.

Oh what the heck it's probably a false dawn... I refuse to get my hopes up after such poor performances this season.

I'm very happy with this I think he is the best manager (in terms of CV) that we realistically could have got immediately.

His style is very diciplined with two very solid center back and attacking full backs. He also plays with two solid, strong center midfielders and attacking wingers. Sometimes he played with 4-4-1-1 formation to the striker in behind can help out the midfield too. I expect his starting line-up to look something like;

..................................Cerny...................................
.......................King.................Kaboul......................
Chimbonda.......................................................LeeYP
.....................Zokora.............Huddlestone..................
Lennon...............................................................Bale
................................Keane.......................................
...............................Berbatov....................................

Also, if you believe reports, he was interested in Zokora and Chimbonda when he was at Sevilla so hopefully he can get the best out of them.

Alvarez was his assistant at Sevilla and looks like he might be doing that for us too, but that has not been confirmed. The club has however confirmed that they are in talks with Leeds Utd over the possible appointment of Gus Poyet (one of my favorite all-time Spurs players even though he was only here for a couple of seasons. Liverpool fans remember his flicked header into the corner at anfield?). They might have a 3 way team similar to Chelsea at the moment with Grant, Ten Cate and Clarke.

We can confirm that the Board has this evening asked Martin Jol, Club Manager and Chris Hughton, First Team Coach to stand down from their positions with immediate effect.

We have not taken these decisions lightly or without recognition of the contribution both Martin and Chris have made to the Club.

Chairman Daniel Levy said: “For me, Martin and Chris’ departure is regrettable. Our greatest wish was to see results turn in our favour and for there to be no need for change. We feel honoured that Martin has been manager at our Club, having seen us qualify twice for Europe. Chris has been with us since 1977, bar a three year period, both as player and coach and he has been an excellent ambassador for the Club. They have been professional, popular and respected members of the coaching staff and there will always be a warm welcome for them both at the Lane.”

Martin Jol added: “I can understand the position of the Club in light of the results. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here. Tottenham Hotspur is a special Club and I want to thank the terrific staff and players. For me the fans were always amazing with their support so I would also like to say thank you – I shall never forget them.”

We shall report in due course on new appointments to the coaching staff. In the interim, the First Team will be coached by our current Development Coach, Clive Allen and Alex Inglethorpe, our Youth Team manager.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Ramos and Poyet in next week or next season depending on who you believe.
I've been wanting him out for the last few weeks but now it's hit me that he's gone it's quite emotional.
The fans knew because the news broke during the game last night and they were signing his name and it was all too much for MJ and i think I saw a tear fall.

Thanks, Martin it's was good while it lasted.

It's been quite contentious in the past, this topic. But sometimes you just can't help but wonder if players are really injured.

We all know clubs (and their managers) want to keep their players fit for the next game, but sometimes it's just crazy. Players suddenly injure themselves in training, and can't show up for an international match, friendlies in particular.

I reckon something has to be done about this. Yes, players ultimately have a choice on whether or not they want to play for their countries, but I think some sort of confirmation by the FA should be made - perhaps the FA's physios get sent to the clubs and check if the injuries are for real. This way, the privilege of playing for your country isn't destroyed, or its integrity eroded.

I seem to think Bernd Schuster has done well thus far - he's added in that element of discipline to the team, which obviously every football team needs. And for the first time in a while, I actually see the players fighting for the ball as if their lives depended on it. That's the way.

I hope it continues!

125th birthday match and at 4-1 to Villa their fans we're singing happy birthday.

Amazing match, amazing comeback and with a temperature of 38.4 degrees C my celebrations of Kaboul's goal in the last minute were rather subdued.

At 4-1 I would have taken a draw but looking at the bigger picture it's not a good result. Villa aren't good and we were at home. Sloppy Robinson could have (being very harsh) stopped 3 of their goals. Liverpool away next not expecting any points from that and that would leave us on 6 points from 9 games. Not good times.

Unfortunately the players seem to be behind Jol too.
